Mind
At Kolbe Academy, our goal is to develop the whole person—mind, body and soul—to form effective agents for Christ in the world. To develop the mind to its fullest potential, we use the Ignatian Method, which focuses on training the memory, understanding and will with a goal of being able to speak, write and act well. Especially in high school, we utilize a classical, literature-based curriculum, which elevates the mind and soul by studying the great works of Western civilization. We stand by high educational standards by expecting the best and always encouraging excellence—there is no grade inflation at Kolbe. Finally, we emphasize public speaking, as we must be able to communicate effectively to win souls for Christ.
Body
To be a complete person, one must not neglect the physical aspects of life. Thus, we have a regular, structured physical education program at Kolbe Academy. Children in grades 1-4 participate in PE daily. Students in grades 5-12 (boys and girls separately) participate in twice-weekly martial arts and physical fitness instruction from certified instructors. This is on top of the hockey, capture the flag, basketball, kickball, jump rope, etc., that happen at lunch and on breaks.
Soul
Jesus Himself taught us that the fundamental purpose of life is to achieve salvation. We do all we can to foster this impulse at Kolbe Academy. Students attend Mass frequently, including every First Friday at a local parish. Everyone participates in morning, noon and afternoon prayers, including a Morning Offering and the Angelus. On Fridays in Lent, we do the Stations of the Cross. We frequently arrange for priests to visit for mini-retreats. Junior High and High School students help prepare meals for the needy, to show faith in action by service to others.
