Thoughts about Teaching for Kolbe....

Mrs. Kelly Powers

Mathematics Department Chair

Teacher since 2013-14 School Year

" 'For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.' ~Matthew 6:8

When I was first approached about helping start Kolbe's online school, I had a great part time job that I loved and no desire for additional work. The prospect of teaching online did not appeal to me. And yet, I somehow found myself teaching Geometry for Kolbe that fall. Because God knew what I needed.

Five years later, and I see so much more clearly now. I see how you can create a sense of community through a computer screen. I see the benefits of knowing and working with people from all over the country (and even the world!). I've watched our program grow and flourish and I feel so honored to have been a part of it.

Most of all, I see the need that Kolbe had fulfilled in my life. It has allowed me to serve so many with the talents that God has given me. And yet, I have not had to sacrifice my service to my family. In addition, working in a Catholic environment has helped develop a deeper love of the Lord. I am truly thankful for the needs that Kolbe had filled in my life."

Theology Department Chair

Teacher since 2014-15 School Year.

"Teaching for Kolbe has enriched my life; my students inspire me daily. What's more, the network of Kolbe educators fosters an environment, both academic and spiritual, that is truly valuable and difficult to come by."

Dr. Stacy Trasancos

Science & Theology Department

Teacher since 2014-15 School Year.

"Teaching at Kolbe is—I don’t say this lightly—transcendental, in the Aristotelian sense of excellence, extraordinary, beyond the bounds of any single category. Kolbe Academy allows me, as an instructor in my home, to reach students who are homeschooled all over the US and even other countries. In three years, I have not had a single discipline problem, and therefore, I have been able to inspire the students in ways I was not able to do as a public school teacher. The online environment keeps the focus on learning. The students are home with their families but entrusted to my guidance specifically for science education. Parents, educators, and administrators come together guided by the institution’s mission “to assist the home educator in forming classically educated young men and women.” Kolbe Academy is giving a modern, bigger, meaning to the very word 'academy'."

Mrs. Elizabeth Hoxie

Science Department Chair

Teacher since 2014-15 School Year

"Louis Pasteur, Father of Immunology and a devout Catholic said that, "Little science takes you away from God but more of it takes you to Him." At Kolbe Academy, it is my joy to be part of rigorous program of scientific study. We teach our students to think critically and methodically, to question what they observe and seek answers to those questions. Students graduate Kolbe classes not with a "little science," but with a profound appreciation for the intricacies of the natural world and a new awe of its Creator."

Dr. Jordan Almanzar

Foreign Language Department Chair

Teacher since 2014-15 School Year

"Teaching for Kolbe Academy has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. Our students and staff enjoy a phenomenal solidarity, which I think this comes from the unimpeded converging of people with like-minded educational goals. We are traversing the typical obstacles, such as geography, and are connecting the best students and teachers across the globe. This is my favorite aspect of being a teacher at Kolbe Academy."

Mrs. Sarah Bjorgaard

Math Department

Teacher since 2015-16 School Year

"Kolbe Academy has been an incredible blessing in my family's life. Not only does my income from two classes allow us to take on a mortgage, but Kolbe appreciates that I am a wife and a mother first - they work with me to ensure that I take on an appropriate workload, and are extremely supportive, at both the administrative and departmental levels. I especially appreciated this support during my recent maternity leave and afterwards. As a former "in-school" teacher, this top-to-bottom support is quite refreshing! I also love our students and families - they are a joy to work with. Many of them have a love of learning (even pertaining to mathematics!) that I did not frequently witness in my previous teaching career, and have hearts for God. I very much enjoy my job - and the fact that my commute consists of 30 paces only makes it even better."

Mrs. Donna Tennant

Teacher since 2015-16 School Year

"I love that fact that I work for a school that is true to the magisterium of the Catholic Church; where the teachers truly care about the students;  and where the students are challenged. Our students are the best!"

Teacher since 2016-17 School Year

"Before teaching here I was first drawn to Kolbe Academy for my children because of its commitment to giving a classical education that was steeped in the tradition of the Church.  I found that Kolbe had developed a vibrant sense of community that is a joy to be a part of.  Even with the physical distance between us, the Kolbe community could not be closer.  The staff, teachers, and department heads all work together with families to form young students to go out into the world and be witnesses for Christ and His Church!"
