Mathematics

Grades K-3

Kolbe’s vision for mathematics is to prepare students well in the formative years for the more rigorous topics they will see in middle and high school.  We offer two math programs in our curriculum so that parents have the option to choose a curriculum that best matches their student’s learning style.  The Pearson Mathematics program offers a standard preparation for fourth grade when Saxon Mathematics is begun.  We also offer Singapore® Math, which is a mastery program that offers enrichment for the most able mathematics student to supplemental materials for the struggling student.

Grades 4-6

Kolbe’s curriculum continues to emphasize solid math choices for mathematics to prepare students with different learning styles for junior high and high school.  We offer Saxon Mathematics at this level.  Saxon is one of the original homeschool math programs and has been a standard in the homeschooling world for decades.  Kolbe has also offers Singapore® Math, which is a mastery program that offers enrichment for the most able mathematics student to supplemental materials for the struggling student.

Grades 7-8

Kolbe Academy aims to keep the role of the parent as primary educator in mind with its math options for junior high school.  While many students will be ready for Algebra 1 in 8th grade, we know that many students will need to wait until high school for the abstract material Algebra 1 students encounter.  Therefore, we offer several choices for 7th and 8th grade, including Saxon Mathematics 8/7 with Prealgebra for 7th grade and Saxon Algebra 1/2 for 8th grade.  Or, for students who are ready for Algebra 1 in 8th grade, the options of Saxon Algebra 1 or Harold Jacobs Elementary Algebra. Our Online Academy will begin using Sadlier-Oxford's Fundamentals of Algebra and Foundations of Algebra for 7th and 8th grade math respectively.  Those performing well in Fundamentals of Mathematics can progress directly to Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.

High School

The high school math years can be daunting for homeschooling families.  Kolbe Academy aims to provide rigorous math options but with the support you need to accomplish these courses.   For students who have not started Algebra 1 yet, we offer of Saxon Algebra 1 or Foerster Algebra 1 (available mid summer 2014).  We are proud to offer Honors coursework in Geometry: A Guided Inquiry (available mid summer 2014), Algebra 2/Trigonometry (Foerster Algebra & Trigonometry), Precalculus (Foerster Precalculus with Trigonometry and Saxon Advanced Math) and Calculus (Foerster Calculus and Saxon Calculus); and college preparatory coursework in Geometry (Geometry: A Guided Inquiry), Algebra 2 (Foerster & Saxon), Precalculus (Foerster and Saxon) and Calculus (Foerster and Saxon).  And not to worry, the majority Foerster texts have accompanying DVDs available to aid students in understanding concepts.
