Art of Photography

This is a course about seeing.  It develops a student’s sense of seeing in two ways.

Course Description

First, the student learns to see the world as an artist through the lens of the camera.  Second, the student learns, in the light of Catholic teaching, to see the true goal of art as expressing the beauty of God’s creation in all its forms.  Students explore the art and craft of photography both through theory and practical hands-on application, along with developing an understanding of the Catholic Church’s teaching on the nature of art and its role in leading us towards God.

Note: To gain the most from the hands-on exercises, students should have access to a camera that allows the ability to override automatic settings (such as f-stop and shutter speed).  Students need the ability to upload photographs to the course website in Schoology.

Academic Semester Credit classes are worth 5 credits of academic credit in the discipline indicated and are graded by the teacher on the A-F scale.  A Kolbe transcript will be generated automatically for any student who completes an Academic Semester Credit class.  Students should expect the typical amount of outside work in these classes, including papers, reading, exams and/or final projects, and other assignments.  All Academic Semester courses may be counted toward the subject requirements of the Standard or Magna Cum Laude Diplomas. Students pursuing the Summa Cum Laude diploma may count the Fine Arts courses toward their fine arts subject requirements, but the remainder do not fulfill any of the Summa diploma's subject requirements.
