2017-18 Tuition and Calendar

Homeschool Program Improvements

Live science lab is now available to be taken alongside our homeschool or self-paced Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses. Our live science lab will be staffed by our excellent online teachers and meet approximately every other week. Homeschool students interested in live lab should indicate their desire to take an online course on their enrollment form in order to enroll for the science lab. See below for more details.

Foreign Language Conversation lab is now available to be taken alongside our homeschool or self-paced Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 courses.  The conversation lab will be staffed by our foreign language department and meet once/week.  Interested homeschool students should indicate their desire to take an online course on their enrollment form in order to enroll for the conversation lab.  See below for more details.

Supplemental Math Lab will also be available for students taking our homeschool or self-paced Math 7, Math 8, or Algebra 1 courses.  The lab will follow the progression of the Sadlier Math program for Math 7 and 8, and Foerster Algebra 1 for the Algebra 1 lab, however, students using other equivalent math curriculums could benefit.  Students in Geometry are also welcome to enroll in the Algebra 1 Lab.  See below for more details.

Online Course Program Improvements

Online Courses Expanded to Grade 6: Most notable is that we will be adding a complete Grade 6 to online courses.  This includes brand new courses: Religion 6, English Grammar 6, Literature 6, History 6 (All Ye Lands) and Math 6.  To accommodate the extra middle schoolers, a second section of Earth Science will be added as well.

Literature: We are excited to announce that we will be offering AP Literature and Composition.  Much research has gone into this course to make sure it can be offered with the goals and mission of Kolbe Academy at heart.  Students enrolled in our Summa Cum Laude diploma program may take this course in lieu of the Modern Literature requirement.

Foreign Language: We will no longer be offering German 1 or German 2 as on online course.  However, we will be adding French 1 to our language offerings.  For those interested in taking German, both homeschool and self-paced courses are available.

New Supplemental Online Programs

As we head into our fifth year of our online program, we are very excited to be offering a few new programs!  Here is a quick description of each new program. Note that the complete details of these programs are still forthcoming.

Hands-On Science Lab: We will be offering a live hands-on science lab for our Biology, Chemistry, and Physics students.  The lab will be one live class approximately every other week and will run for 1 hr, 20 mins each time.  Students will have the option of taking the hands-on lab in lieu of completing some of the virtual labs in their online class.  Homeschool and self-paced students are welcome to sign up for these labs even if they are not taking the corresponding online course.

Math Lab: We will be offering a supplemental live math class to review and reinforce concepts already taught during the week in math class for Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, and Algebra 1.  Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about course materials and teachers will have time to work more sample problems.  New material will not be presented in this lab, nor will additional homework assignments be required.  Math Lab will meet every week for an hour.  Homeschool and self-paced students are welcome to sign up for these labs even if they are not taking the corresponding online course.

Foreign Language Conversation Lab: Students will have the opportunity to sign up for a live conversation lab for Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and French 1.  This lab will offer students an extensive opportunity for using conversation skills with other students as well as the teacher, as well as a quick grammar review from the week's lesson.  New material will not be presented in this lab, nor will additional homework assignments be required.  Homeschool and self-paced students are welcome to sign up for these labs even if they are not taking the corresponding online course.

Middle School Homeroom: Until this point, we have treated our 7th and 8th Grade students virtually the same as our high school students.  With the addition of 6th Grade next year, it is time to turn our attention to the specific needs of our younger students.  Our homeroom program will be included for any 6th, 7th, or 8th Grade online student at no additional tuition charge.  Students will have the opportunity to hone their study skills, and homeroom teachers will be keeping a closer eye on their students.  Homeroom will meet live once/week for 30-45 minutes.  Only students enrolled in online courses will be able to participate in this program.

Self-Paced Program Improvements

New Self-Paced Courses: Kolbe Academy is making a major push to round out our self-paced program by converting the vast majority of our "original" self-paced courses to new format self-paced courses.  The new courses include video lectures by our teachers (instead of pre-recorded online courses), as well as self-graded quizzes in most classes.  A full list of new courses will be available on our website toward the end of February.

Self-Paced Plus Grading: We are very excited to offer a new program to complement our self-paced courses.  This new program is called "Self-paced Plus."  Families who enroll in a self-paced course will have the option of adding a teacher to the course to grade assignments selected by Kolbe.  Teachers will also be charged with overriding self-graded quizzes when necessary and moderating a discussion board for students who have questions.  Note that teachers will not be setting deadlines for students, but will provide grading for select assignments.
